The profession of conservation and restoration is one which requires a level of professionalism and assessment to the artwork that separates the artist from a learned technician.

That being said, I have had the full consent and understanding of my client (friend) of my shortcomings in the field of conservation and restoration, as well as the limited knowledge I possessed at the time.

This was my first restoration project. I was ecstatic but cautious. There was no one but me.

Acrylic on canvas 40 x 50 cm Artist: unknown The painting has visible damage on the eyes of the frame, and rust stains on the canvas between the two frames. There is a visible white strip of paint that was painted on during previous handling of the painting frame, and the painting itself has various missing colored spots.

The procedure:

  1. Cleaning the dust from the front of painting as well as the back of the frame.

  2. Protecting the canvas and addressing the cracks and missing spots of the frame.

  3. After filling and leveling the frame, it was painted by an acrylic based warm white color.

  4. The white strip was removed by a spirit solution and then the painted layers were retouched and properly added to the missing spots.

  5. The painting was remounted back to the frame.

THE RETOUCHING OF THE PAINTING

And the retouching was done in the same technique in the at the upper left corner and other areas in the smaller amounts. It was intentionally not overworked in the desire to keep its first musing impression.

Throughout the process I had in mind that everything my brush had to do was to bridge the idea of the original artist and my intent to preserve its grandiose and its beauty.

Thanks to my dear friend and her trust in my abilities, I had the pleasure of working on this art piece. Thank you Helen!
